there is a option a small logo of a person next to your pp in the phone.when you click it goes to your profile page. from there you can freely change you pp and the background image
I signed up with my Gmail too, and it was a little confusing, but I was able to change mine. If you're on mobile, click your profile Pic, instead of going to profile, go to settings. You should be able to change your picture and user name if you want from there
