The Prosecutor's Daughter
If the parties think so, then we have no choice. It's too bad. I really wanted to see a daughter-in-law like you.
So-hyun's lips curled up slightly as she quietly eavesdropped on the phone call filled with a sigh from Do-heon.
It seemed like she was talking to the mother of the woman whose match Do-heon had arranged.
Both mothers had been pushing for the two to meet again, but the atmosphere had been that the parties themselves had rejected it, so it didn't come to fruition.
"Yes, I understand. I hope my daughter finds a good match too. Yes, go in."
After ending the call, Do-heon let his shoulders droop with a face as if the world had lost him.
"Mom, don't be too disappointed. There's another good match out there, just like you said."
So-hyun rubbed Do-heon's slumped shoulders, which had lost their energy.
On the surface, she had a heavy expression, but inside, she was calling out in joy.
"That's right? There's a good match out there, just like you said, So-hyun."
She tried to steel her mind that it couldn't be helped, but Do-heon couldn't hide his desolate expression.
How much effort had she put into creating a match for Do-heon's marriage, and it ended with just one meeting.
They couldn't force a marriage by dragging each other into it when they didn't like each other, and it felt as if her chest was tightly stuffed.
"Ah, sigh."
Do-heon furrowed his brows and pressed his temples as if his head was throbbing.
It hadn't been long since she had started to have such greed for Do-heon's marriage.
When Jeong Cheol remarried, she had thought it was a great blessing to live under the title of vice chairman's mother-in-law.
Do-heon too, as long as he didn't fall out of Chairman Jeong's eyes, there was no need to worry about eating and living.
She had lived gratefully thinking that was enough, but the more time passed, the more her greed grew.
He had to be a son who was a bit better. Although he was her own child, Do-heon had no fault in any way.
Not only had he graduated from a prestigious American university with his own efforts without any trouble, but he was also recognized for his abilities by producing visible results within the company.
It was the opposite of Se-hun, who had caused trouble since middle school with the same age group.
In a way, this was all because Se-hun was inferior. One side being too weak made the other stand out more.
If Se-hun had been a little better than Do-heon, he wouldn't have been able to have such scary greed.
Because Se-hun kept showing gaps, there was a desire to poke in once.
'If only Do-heon had been Chairman Jeong's biological son' was a phrase that flowed out in the company without much interest.
It meant that if Chairman Jeong's blood had mixed even a little, the succession structure would have changed.
The voices worrying that Se-hun would be the successor of Kangho Group were rising.
It had been since she learned about it.
She didn't want to leave Do-heon as Se-hun's lackey anymore.
People say no one knows what others are thinking.
Or maybe not. If Chairman Jeong had gone senile, there might be an incident where Do-heon takes the successor position.
So, she gave a large sum of money to the successful Madam and arranged the match. If Do-heon had a solid in-law family, it wouldn't be a bad thing.
She had stretched out her hand with effort after hearing the fortune teller's words that a daughter of the prosecutor and a media company would be even better.
She had mobilized all her connections to make the match, but even the prosecutor's daughter and Do-heon had lukewarm reactions.
She wanted to push them to meet three times saying that if one side had a heart, they could know after one meeting, but since both said no, there was nothing she could do.
"Mom, how about we go get a massage to refresh our mood?"
So-hyun swallowed the laughter that kept coming out and asked.
"That sounds good."
Do-heon didn't want to do anything because his mind was complicated, but for the sake of So-hyun who was trying hard to comfort him, he seemed to have to follow.
"I'll go up and prepare and come down. Mom, prepare too."
"Okay."
So-hyun hugged Do-heon once as if to say not to worry and went up to the second floor.
As soon as she entered the room and closed the door, So-hyun lay on the bed, rolled her feet, and enjoyed herself.
She was overjoyed at the news that Do-heon's second meeting had failed.
Just a few days ago, when she had gone to see the match, she had been anxiously thinking what if they got married, but all worries disappeared. Yeah, marriage isn't that easy.
"What are you wearing?"
So-hyun opened the closet door wide and hummed a tune while starting to choose clothes.
It was the time when she took out a luxury one-piece dress she had bought recently and looked at it in the mirror.
A phone call came from her friend Ye-ri.
"I'm going out now."
She was about to hang up when Ye-ri urgently asked.
"Is there a woman that Do-heon oppa is meeting?"
"A woman?"
"If you had a girlfriend, you would have said so earlier. I didn't know that, and I was upset thinking you weren't introducing me because you didn't like me."
"What nonsense are you talking?"
So-hyun asked while putting down the clothes she was holding on the bed with an incredulous expression.
Ring.
"I don't know what you're saying. Eh?!"
When So-hyun clicked on the photo, she froze in place.
In the photo, as Ye-ri said, Do-heon was with some woman.
"Even if taken from afar, you can clearly see Do-heon oppa, right?"
"Where was it taken? When was it taken?"
So-hyun's pupils sank heavily. It was a side profile, but just from the silhouette, it was definitely Do-heon.
"It was two days ago. Central Hotel, restaurant. I saw them coming out after eating with friends."
So-hyun gripped her phone tightly with trembling hands.
Central Hotel was the place owned by Oh Seon-gyu, Do-heon's close friend.
"No way."
So-hyun muttered like a crazy person, unable to take her eyes off the photo.
She prided herself on knowing his romantic relationships clearly, except for other things.
He said he would be staying in a hotel near the company for a few days because of busy work, but there was a woman.
It was unbelievable. So-hyun couldn't believe it even when she saw the photo herself.
"How old is your girlfriend? She looked really young, and she was really pretty. Is she a trainee aiming to be an actress? Anyway, with that kind of looks, she must be able to meet Do-heon oppa... I feel my self-esteem dropping. I'm on my way to the dermatologist now."
Ye-ri poured out her frustration in detail, but nothing registered in So-hyun's ears. Her gaze was fixed on the woman sitting across from Do-heon. Who was she? What kind of woman? So-hyun glared at the face of a woman she had never seen before as if to kill her. She couldn't shake off a feeling of something intense. Because she hadn't seen a woman alone with him except for the match.
"I didn't know Do-heon oppa was such a gentle man. He cut the steak and fed me spaghetti. He was completely sweet. I thought I was going to die from the pain in my stomach. My friends were in an uproar seeing oppa. Where on earth can you meet a man like that?"
"No, it can't be Do-heon! It can't be Do-heon!"
So-hyun, who had imagined the scene without realizing it from Ye-ri's words, couldn't control the boiling anger and threw her phone away.
So-hyun had secretly checked the black box video attached to Do-heon's car before. She had confirmed whether there was a woman or not. He always went back and forth between the company and home.
It was unbelievable that there was a woman with someone who only knew work and had no time to meet women. It was definitely unbelievable. The man in the photo was definitely Do-heon.
So-hyun, overwhelmed with confusion, felt like her head would explode. She needed confirmation. It would feel better to hear directly from Do-heon what the situation was.
"There must have been an unavoidable situation. A situation that anyone could misunderstand. Where would Do-heon have time to meet a woman? Since there was no woman, he went on the match. Yeah, there must have been an unavoidable situation. So, what was that situation! Why was he with a woman!"
So-hyun, rationalizing like a double personality to calm her heart, suddenly changed and shouted like a madman.
It had been 14 years since they lived as siblings, but So-hyun had never once thought of Do-heon as family. She still vividly remembered the trembling and pounding in her heart the day she first met him.
The teenage girl who only knew her dad as a man felt confused and guilty about feeling emotions she shouldn't feel towards a strange man who suddenly became family.
But as time passed, her feelings for Do-heon only became clearer.
At the time when she was being bullied and going through a hard time, she accepted his heart that protected her side as a family member as her own whim.
She accepted it as a special and affectionate feeling and nurtured her emotions alone.
From then on.
So-hyun had only looked at him. No other man had entered her eyes.
For her, only Do-heon could be a man.
They lived in the same house but were not related by blood.
Legally, there was no problem.
So-hyun's guilt for being deeply in love with him had gradually dulled, and she thought it would be fine to live like this forever as long as he didn't get married.
So, when he got engaged two years ago, she had harassed the fiancée without regard to means to break off the engagement because another woman appeared.
It was unacceptable. How had she protected him, and how had she come this far with what heart.
She had lived with her nerves on edge like a wife with delusions of jealousy, fearing that another woman would take him, but she couldn't let another woman take him now.
She needed to check with him right away. So-hyun started looking for her phone with a face that had turned pale.
